In addition, check out the tools available at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php for some program-specific tools. Microsoft has also developed a Malicious Software Removal Tool (available from http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx). It won't eradicate spyware on your system, but it's handy for rooting out particularly hard to kill worms, such as Blaster and Sasser. Add it to your Windows 2000/XP toolkit.

Also check out Crap Cleaner which will clean out your internet, OS and apps of various logs, temp files, cache, etc.

Go to Sysinternals, click on the security link and download the RootkitRevealer application which will check your system for Rootkits.

The following was suggested on a lockergnome forum as software which should be used:

Windows XP Prefetch Clean And Control

Launch it and choose "Monitor boot file launch only".

Taken From Microsoft Website:

Windows XP monitors the files that are used when the computer starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP can prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby data that is expected to be requested is read ahead into the cache. Prefetching boot files and applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP and start applications.

This information is logged and stored on your hard drive taking up space and requiring a process to be kept running monitoring which applications are being run. This has a performance impact on your PC. Disabling the Prefetch function or at least only enabling it for the Boot Files will allow you to free up some system resources and preserve some disk space.

DLL Archive

Everyone has uninstalled programs at one point or another, just to be presented with that wonderful dialog asking whether or not we want to delete some 'shared' Windows resource... Do we? Does something else use that DLL file it's asking about? Help!!! That's where AnalogX DLL Archive comes in - it searches through all the files on your system and lets you know if any of them contain references to the DLL's in question!

AnalogX DLL Archive is super-simple to use, just click search and let it do it's thing - once done, you'll be presented with a list of all the DLL's that don't have references in the system! Then just select which ones you think aren't necessary anymore and archive them; it's that simple! Make a mistake? No problem, restoring DLL's from the archive is just as simple - nothing is deleted until YOU delete it.

Windows XP Tweaks - use at your own risk

Put the Start Menu in Order

1. Open the Registry Editor
Click Start > Programs, right-click any entry and choose Sort by Name.
Click Start > Run, type regedit and press Enter.
Select the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder.

2. Tweak Permissions
Choose Edit > Permissions, click Advanced and untick the "Inherit from parent the permission entries..." box.
A pop-up box will appear, so click Copy followed by OK to return to the first screen.

3. Make Read Only
Finally, select your username from the list and clear the Allow tick box next to Full Control (leave the Read tick box alone) and click Apply.
Repeat for the Administrators group.
Finally, click OK.

Always Unload DLL's

When programs close, they're supposed to shut down the .dll files that are associated with them, too. But this doesn't always happen, and the .dll detritus can cause system instability.

Cascade Menu Items

Add expanded menus to My Pictures, My Documents and the Control Panel.

Copy To and Move To

Add "Copy To" and "Move To" choices to the context menu.

Enable Super Prefetch

You can boost your Prefetch files by enabling a feature that's packaged in Windows XP SP2. You will need to restart your computer.
